This book, published in 1886 and illustrated by Randolph Caldecott, chronicles the American writer Washington Irving's nostalgic recollections of Christmas traditions in 19th century England. The text first appeared in 1819 in Irving's Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. , which also contained such classics as "Rip van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." John Hancock, president of the Continental Congress, commissioned this portrait of George Washington as Commander in Chief of the Continental Army in order to flatter and reward him for liberating Boston (visible in the background) from the British in March 1776. Hancock wrote to Washington, "I beg, Sir, you will be pleased to accept my heartfelt thanks for the attention you have showed to my property in that town." Washington reluctantly accepted Hancock's invitation to sit for the...

Here is the first Gregg Shorthand version of A Christmas Carol. It was published in 1918. It matches the 1916 Gregg Shorthand Manual. The same plates by Winifred Kenna were used in "Short Classics in Shorthand" (1927), which featured five short novels. This version is heavily abridged, including shorthand for approximately 20% of the English novel.
